OVERVIEW
Some love stories are earth shattering while others are on the comfortable end of the spectrum; for Walter and Diane, they fell into the latter end of things. Their first encounters were anything but life changing, in fact, Diane wasn't charmed by Walter whatsoever. But the more they interacted with one another, the more she started to understand his mannerisms and his rather large heart underneath all the gruff exterior. At the time of their meeting, Walter was still in the navy and Diane worked at the locale cafe many visited while on shore leave. Not everyone enjoyed the job but Diane loved hearing the stories.

A year later, Diane and Walter were married and she began to travel around with him, making a home at one base when Walter shipped out again. The two decided to not have any children for awhile but fate had other plans in motion.

On a sunny afternoon, Rick was born while Walter was still on assignment and it would take a year later for him to return thanks to an honorable discharge. From the very beginning, Rick learned to be stoic and properly behaved. Children were to be an extension of their parents, after all, and Walter did not tolerate any form of disobedience. Everything needed to be in perfect working order and Rick tried to do his best to make his father proud. Regardless, he formed strong bonds with both his parents and he knew they loved him even if they didn't say the words or outwardly show it all the time. They taught him a lot about honor, bravery and listening to your gut.

The Grimes were also a very religious family on his mother's side and it only added more rules to Rick's life and nearly unreachable expectations but he continued to strive for the perfection. All the pressure from it only soured Rick's outlook on religion and in most cases made him turn from it completely.

Things began to change for the family yet again with the birth of another son, this pregnancy also a complete surprise and Jeffrey, unlike Rick did not want to live by any sorts of rules or regulations. A wild child from the very beginning, despite Rick's best efforts to try and help Jeff 'see the starkly white and proper light', he never went by any restrictions. Jeff preferred to be free as a bird and try everything around him.

Backing up Jeff's big mouth during their school years prompted Rick's later career path, though. Rick found he really enjoyed sticking up for his brother and protecting him, drifting his focus towards law enforcement, something his father found incredibly respectable. It wasn't the praise he wanted or the affection he desired but it was something at least. It also helped his father had eventually risen to the ranks of Sheriff after his recovery; a position his grandfather held prior. The Grimes' family held a long history of law enforcement and politics within the small Georgia town and Rick helped to secure the legacy.

While in high school, Rick met Shane and Lori, two people who would change everything around for him. They were complete opposites of people he was used to and Shane helped to open him up and slightly rebel. Only slightly because Rick still kept his wits about him and knew challenging his father too much would only end in disaster. He knew his parents loved him but their expectations were nearly suffocating and he needed something to unwind with.

Upon graduation, Shane and Rick decided to ship off to the Academy and Lori went along with them, taking up a few random jobs until she found something she liked. She also enrolled in a few community college courses. After graduation, Rick popped the question and Lori excitedly accepted. The two were married in a small ceremony soon after since they didn't want a lot of unnecessary fuss and just wanted to be married. Rick and Shane landed jobs at the station and became partners, which locked in more pieces of the life puzzle. Everything was bliss and the birth of Carl only completed the picture for Rick. He really took to being a father and with all his focus on Carl, cracks started to form with Lori. They were once the golden couple; the cliche high school sweethearts everyone aspired to be. Every other couple in their circle of friends called them picture perfect and they should have been. Everything was a checkmark for them and Rick didn't understand what kept going wrong. As Carl grew older, the fights increased and Rick spent more and more time at the station when not with his son. Lori wanted to talk so much out and Rick had never been wired to openly discuss his feelings and emotions. He showed his feelings in smaller ways and not in grand and elaborate discussions. Didn't she understand that?

Things came to a near breaking point the day the world changed for good. It should have been a routine drug bust but things took a devastating turn and one shot later landed Rick not only in the hospital but in a coma.

When he finally woke up, the entire world already changed and the dead had started to rise and not remain in their graves. Upon waking in the hospital, Rick stumbled from the disaster, encountering Morgan who filled him in on what happened and that one bite from a walker changed everything. Completely determined to find Lori and Carl, Rick set out to Atlanta but it was already overrun and he only escaped death from Glenn. The guy didn't have to help him but because of that he remained breathing and against all odds he did find his family. It was one of the longest shots but Rick Grimes tended to make the impossible happen.

The happiness of the reunion did not last and being thrust into the leadership role changed the dynamics for good. He lost Shane because of it and countless others along the way. The world wanted to swallow them up whole but Rick fought as fiercely as he could to keep it from happening. It added a lot of pressure onto his shoulders but he refused to succumb to it and growing up with such pressures helped in the new world. All the training assisted as well but sometimes things went terribly wrong.

The camp they tried to make safe was overrun, the very same happened with the Greene farm they encountered afterwards when Carl was accidentally shot. From there, the group scattered and they lost more than a few of their own. Each death ripping a piece of Rick away and while he tried to maintain his strong sense of moral ethics things were shattering bit by bit. The darkness of the world seeping into the cracks left behind from the breaks. The discovery of the prison should have been 'the place' for them to settle down for good but things soured eventually, teaching all of them that the survivors were far worse than the walkers. They encountered cannibals, claimers, Terminus and more viciousness than anyone ever needed to witness. But nothing they went through ever compared to one solitary man backed by others equally as deranged as him. One name. Just one name ripped apart the new place they finally stumbled on that should have been their lasting home. Alexandria was the place, much safer than the camp, farm or prison but Negan wanted to control everything. He wanted to bleed them dry but the man didn't know who he was messing with.

Rick had bitten someone's neck right out when Carl was at risk and had killed more than his fair share to keep others safe. He took the darkness so they didn't have to, at least, he tried. He broke himself down again and again, trying to keep the trauma from piling up too fiercely. The worse of which being Shane and Lori's betrayal and then the death of Lori while giving birth to Judith. He knew the little girl wasn't his but vowed to raise her as his own. She would be his no matter who her father actually was. It would be all out war and while things looked bleak Rick wouldn't give in or surrender. He refused to back down. He was Walter Grimes' son and had the blood of a neverending fighter flowing through his veins. It only took one mistake to end things in their world and Negan made it the second he decided to challenge Rick and he would pay for it. Oh, would he ever pay for it.

In the end, they were all infected and it was only a matter of time in some eyes but Rick refused to give up the hope for a better world. There had to be something more and a chance for a life focused on the living and not only on the dead.

( rick and crew have been through so much so i'll just link to the wiki rather than having ten million paragraphs trying to account for it all. i only briefly covered the major aspects but the wiki has the greater details! find it all here! )

PERSONALITY
Essentially, there are two sides to Rick Grimes and present situations depend on which one is shown. On one side of things, Rick is a man with a strong moral compass and someone who tries to do right by the people around him. His former police skills and honed survival tactics make Rick a worthy adversary for those challenging him and the group he considers his family. He will do anything to protect his family and group, a fierce sort of loyalty that is completely unshakeable. Once someone matters to him, he will go to the ends of the earth for them and in many cases he has in the past.

As a natural leader, Rick makes the tough calls and never backs down from much of anything. Oftentimes, he will take on the bad situations to spare others the pain of it, which only adds more pressure to his shoulders and more things to keep him awake at night. But Rick isn't one to sit idly by, regardless of the situation and has to become involved somehow. He doesn't always want to lead and sometimes prefers to just contribute but if needed Rick will step up and do what needs to be done. He will never shy away from things no matter what. Yet, he will always try to do the right thing and sometimes this moral compass leads to very, very damaging results.

Keeping his people safe is Rick's driving force and it helps retain his humanity as well. He hasn't fallen into the trap of complete brutality and darkness of the world, remaining a good man at the end of it all. There are just too many around him offering rays of light and other perspectives to allow for him to succumb to the evils of their environment. Without that driving force, Rick would be a completely different person, especially without his kids. He needs to have the influence of others to keep him balanced.

On the other side of things, Rick is intensely distrustful and it has only worsened over time. He doesn't want to take any chances or risk his people's safety, which can make him brutal to say the least. This brutality will surface anytime someone he cares about is threatened or risked in any sort of way. He will react quickly and often very violently in his strong need to protect. But at the same time, Rick knows that he has to trust at some point and while it takes some time it can eventually happen. Trusting and relying on others helps a person keep their sanity and their humanity. Those who go at things alone lose to the darkness and become a sort of evil Rick never wants to be.

When it comes to opening up and emotions in general, Rick has a very difficult time with expressing himself, especially through words. He tends to clam up and while he can make grand speeches or talk someone down (thanks academy training!), he has a much more difficult time with expressing his innermost feelings. He fears breaking down and when he does show emotion, it is usually at a breaking point. The breaking points are never a pretty picture and are direct results of so much bottling up.

However, if someone manages to earn Rick's trust and breaks through some of his walls, they will see the lighter side. The one who is more relaxed, enjoys teasing and has a heart nearly too big for his chest. If someone wants to really break Rick, they only have to go for those he cares about because otherwise he doesn't have a lot of fears for his own security. Threatening his group can be the only time he backs down if there aren't any other options. He'll do anything to protect them even if it means swallowing his pride and retreating.

Not much scares Rick but being the direct cause of someone he loves dying is what keeps him up at night. He'll turn problems over in his mind again and again, the very same with failures. Things morph in his mind and darken to a near extreme. He might not have the easiest time with expressing his emotions but the lengths he goes to is how he shows he cares. There are a lot of other smaller ways he does as well but it takes time for someone else to notice and decode them. When it comes down to it, the world hasn't broken him yet. He has his group to thank for it and he will do anything to make sure they have the chance to really live.

ABILITIES
Rick doesn't have any supernatural abilities but he does have a lot of fighting skills and is a deadly shot with firearms. He also has the talent of making nearly anything into a weapon and is rather skilled at tracking people thanks to once being a Sheriff Deputy.
